Can the Rotater Help Baseball Pitchers Fight GIRD?

Using the Rotater to Improve Shoulder Internal Rotation of Baseball Pitchers
We’d like to thank Kyle Boddy at Driveline Baseball for taking the time to evaluate the Rotater. Kyle is the owner of Driveline Baseball, Inc – a training facility specializing in high-speed pitching analysis and strength and conditioning for athletes.
After putting the Rotater to the test for several months, Kyle published this review of the Rotater – Improving Shoulder Internal Rotation with The Rotater. Here’s an excerpt:
“I’ve had the tool for a few months now and have been holding off on reviewing it until I was satisfied that it both did the job and that it was durable enough to keep around. As a guy who generally prefers DIY equipment and used stuff off Craigslist, it takes a lot for more to recommend brand new stuff, but this tool definitely fits the bill. It also helps that Chris and the guys who run the company are stand-up people who really believe in their product and the customer service behind it.”
How to – One Plane Backswing with the Rotater
May 24, 2011
We met Paul Hobart during the PGA Expo in 2008 where Paul picked up and began using the Rotater. Paul is a PGA Professional and the Director of Instruction at Tartan Fields Golf Club. Paul is also the author of Banana Putting.
Paul recently sent me a link to this video he posted on Youtube about the Rotater:
Notes for golfers from Paul:
- the Rotater is designed to “stretch out and work on the mobility in your shoulder joint”
- the Rotater will help you get the club back and behind you for a “one plane” type of backswing
- Paul uses the Rotater a couple of times a day to increase his external shoulder rotation
- also improves follow through and release..to avoid blocking shots out to the right
Shoulder Tool Delivers On Promises

Twitter is a great place to meet unique people…people who are willing to share their knowledge and expertise. Milda Simonaitis is one of those people and is very passionate about fitness. In fact, she is the ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine) Key Contact for 53rd CA Congressional District. So, when I had the opportunity, I contacted Milda in hopes she would evaluate the Rotater. Shee agreed to take a look…this is her response:
Simple and Functional
“First and foremost, I was struck by the design of the Rotater: very simple and functional. I appreciated the ability to adjust it to fit my arm and the fact that it put my arm in the correct position to work the muscles I needed to work. The beauty of this is that it does what it’s supposed to do, and it does it with the least amount of unnecessary gadgetry possible. I have curious kids in the house and there’s little for them to break. High marks for the design!
Supporting Materials are Exceptional
But what I think I appreciated most was the supporting information, particularly the DVD. Because I’m certified as a personal trainer (ACSM-CPT), I feel that providing an appropriate amount of information is one of the keys to success (and for me that means enough to answer the main questions that someone might have). Providing a run-down of the shoulder muscles is invaluable, especially to anyone who isn’t aware of what’s involved in shoulder movement. Eric Beard does an exceptional job of both that and describing how to use the Rotater. His delivery is professional and articulate. The care with which the DVD was developed is a testament to the high quality of this product.
I have to add that while I usually question the wisdom of including bloopers in an instructional DVD, in this case, I found it somewhat gratifying to see even Eric fumbling with getting the Rotater into proper position, much in the same way that I did initially.
“A Definite Recommend!”
I used the Rotater to strengthen the entire shoulder region. I occasionally launch into periods of doing high-rep bodyweight exercises. When I received the Rotater I was doing a push-up challenge (3000 push-ups in 30 days). The Rotater helped stretch my shoulders (which felt awesome, by the way), but after the challenge was over, allowed me to work the muscles that I’d neglected during the previous 30 days. I tend not to have shoulder issues, so I can’t speak to whether or not it would aid in rehab; however, my husband is a former college-level competitive swimmer and baseball player (catcher) and now surfs regularly, so I plan on putting his shoulders to the test as soon as I can nail down a schedule with him!
This is a well-designed product that delivers what it promises. Lots of thought put into it. A definite recommend!”

” The Rotater is Awesome for External / Internal Rotation “
November 13, 2010
I met J.R. online. When I discovered he was trying to overcome a shoulder injury, I asked if he’d like to give the Rotater a try. He said yes, so we sent him a Rotater. This is his response:
Chris,
Thanks for giving me the chance to review the Rotater. It is really a blessing since I separated my left AC joint last year. Since the AC joint is sealed, it is difficult to get any fluid / nutrition to the injury to speed the recovery. The orthopedist gave me a series of dex shots and prescribed a flexibility program. The most important of these ROMs was internal rotation. I still have a bit of pain a year later, but these stretches have allowed me to train pretty hard again.
The Rotater is awesome for external / internal rotation. I have used it at the gym and it is very effective at priming my shoulder for benching, overhead pressing, etc. The important thing was for me to really get my arm locked tight into the Rotater so I could crank hard on it. The Rotater has allowed me to get really aggressive and push the limits of my ROM safely. Those are the immediate benefits. I have made the Rotater a part of my warm up every day. I will check back with you over the next weeks and months with updates on how it has affected my pain and mobility. As of now I am very pleased.
Just so you will know a bit of my background. I am a lawyer and also own Triumph Athletics, LLC which is a performance enhancement facility. I am CSCS, and USAW. I started training at 8, I am now 32. Became a personal trainer in 1999 in college and made a mistake by not making it my full time job instead of lawyering! Maybe I’ll hit a big case, retire, and become a full time Champion Builder? I was a collegiate cyclist and marathoner. Played sports all through HS.
